See Page 393 of "FROM A SOW OR A SPARROW, A HISTORY OF THE SUGG FAMILY" Hendrickson & Hisaw, 1988. These comments are by Ima A. Mewborn, an authority on the SUGG family. Thomas Sugg Sr (I) was the son of George Sugg Sr and wife, Sarah Ives, of Norfolk County, Va. Thomas was born about 1690/95, and most likely in Norfolk Co. VA. He died about 1763 and most likely in Duplin Co. NC. (Duplin Co. NC created from New Hanover Co. NC 1750). About the year 1715 Thomas Sugg married Sarah Eldridge/Aldridge of Northumberland Co. VA. She being born about 1698..(Father William Eldridge?) From the Tithable List of Norfolk Co. VA on 10 June 1730, Thomas Sugg, Sr.(I) was living next door and/or adjacent to his father, George Sugg, Sr. This location being from the Sugg Mill to Deep Creek. By 31 Nov 1731 the Norfolk Co VA Tithables gives his location between Mr Sugg's Mill and Mr Bachelder's Mill, on the west side of The Southern Branch. When Captain Willis Wilson took the Tithable List for Norfolk Co VA from Deep Creek to the bridge & above the bridge to Northwest Landing on 10 June 1736. Thomas Sugg Sr (I) was listed with negro in which was most likely 'Harey' (Harry) who was listed in the 10 June 1735 List for Thomas Sugg, Sr (I). The North Carolina Grantor Index of Johnston Co NC (created from Craven Co. NC 1746) Dobbs Co NC (created from Johnston Co NC 1758) shows records of Thomas Sugg Sr (I). Please note the Grantor/Grantee Index was all that was saved from the Court House fires (two). This index shows who was there, time period, place, and who they were dealing with. County: Johnston - Book No. 1 - Grantor - Thomas Sugg - to Grantee - Samuel Eldridge - page 257 - date book was used Nov 1746 to Apr 1750. County: Johnston - Book No. 1 - Grantor - Thomas Sugg - to Grantee - Thomas Altman - page 343 - date book was used Nov 1746 to Apr 1750. Apparantly Thomas Sugg Sr (I) was in Anson Co NC yet lived in the Duplin Co NC area. Proof that Thomas Sugg Sr (I) was in Anson Co NC by 23 Oct 1759 is found in a record - Deed Book 10, page 23 - wherein he appoints Solomon Hanbury as his attorney to dock the intail of 75 acres of land he received from his father (George Sugg) so the land could be sold to John Mercer (brother-in-law of Thos Sugg). Excerpts from George Sugg's Will of 2 Sept 1734 are quoted in the document. Witnesses: Calib Wallis and Joel Sugg (son of George Sugg, Jr). On the same day 23 Oct 1759 Thomas Sugg Sr (I) sells back to his brother-in-law and sister (Jacob Allen & Priscilla'Sugg'Allen) Deed Book 1 - page 23 - the mill and 10 acres left to Priscilla in her father's will as Priscilla Maund. However the next year on 30 Mar 1735 she leased the Mill and land to Thomas Sugg Sr (I) and gave her name as Priscilla Caton (Cayton). This Anson Co NC document is dated 23 Oct 1759. Deed Book 19 - page 23 - in Edgecomb Co NC. Note: Priscilla Sugg - dau of George Sugg and Sarah Ives/son: Wm Maund III m. William Maund Jr/m. Mary Howell - son: Hardy Maund (1st marriage) m. Thomas Caton/Cayton (2nd marriage) no descendents m. Jacob Allen (3rd marriage) Mary, Merryman, Charles, & Gabriel m. James Johnston Sr (4th marriage) no descendants m. Sarah (unknown) 1st wife daughter: Mary Johnston - dau. of 1st wife. m. john Wooten Sr (his 2nd wife) 1st wife of John Wooten Sr was a daughter of Shadrach Williams (name unknown) Deeds of Duplin Co NC between the years 1750-1794 it should be noted that this part of Duplin Co - where Thomas Sugg Sr (I) lived is now Sampson Co NC. (Duplin created 1750 from New Hanover Co NC - Sampson created 1784 from Duplin Co NC). Thomas Sugg did not move, the county lines and/or boundary lines were changed. From Duplin/Sampson Co NC Deed Books No. 2 - pages 130/2 shows that Thomas Sugg Sr (I) is dealing with the same persons he was dealing with in the Johnston/Dobbs Co NC Records 1746/1750. That being Thomas Sugg to Samuel Eldridge - dated 15 Apr 1751. Another, Duplin/Sampson Co NC Record - Deed Book 2 - page 59 - Thomas Sugg to Thomas Alltman - Abstracts Sampson /Duplin Deeds - Bks 1 thru 3 - by Max R Peterson Jr. '15 Apr 1752' Note by WRO: I am having trouble sorting out the lines dealing with Priscilla Sugg. I am assuming that Wm Maund III was was a child of her 1st marriage and m. Mary Howell who then had son, Hardy Maund.
